What can happen in just one week?
Sub-zero temperatures and frozen plants, sadly...read on
Sub-zero temps are making harvest windows very difficult to come by! We will make every effort to get all items harvested for delivery this week but there is a chance that we will not be able to harvest some of the greens if we do not get a thaw in time. Many of our winter houses are unheated and depend on the sun to warm them during daylight hours so that we may harvest. The sun has been very absent in the past week or so. Root and storage crops are safe and sound in our climate controlled cooler/heater. The greens are the "iffy" part this week for harvest...we will see.
In the online store this week:
Green leaf head lettuce
We will be packing CSA orders as usual this week and will not have the farm store open for "market style pickup" as we had planned...don't worry, we'll do it again!
*Pickup options for On Farm pickup are WEDNESDAY ONLY this week.
When will a heater fail? On the coldest night of the year, of course! Sadly, that is exactly what happened in our seedling house this week. We had many plants overwintering inside for early plant sales as well as all of our early tomatoes that are a complete loss. We had hoped to have microgreens available this week as well...those, frozen as well. A long overdue alarm system is now being installed to help deal with equipment that will not cooperate with us in the middle of the night! I can't even bear to post any pics! Huge setback and significant financial loss - we'll pick up an move on!
Have a safe and Merry Christmas from our farm family to yours!
