Farm/CSA News:

Deliveries for the 2013 season begin this week! If you have already signed up for next year your account has been credited and you are ready to order. Remember, with our CSA you can order as soon as you sign up & payment has been received.  Deliveries this winter are on Wednesday evenings for all sites, except for the week of Thanksgiving. We will be delivering on Tuesday the 20th instead of Wednesday the 21st.****

There are just a few weeks left to get our largest discount of the season.  All shares paid by December 1st receive a 15% credit. This is intended to be both an incentive and reward.  Here's a link to help you get started:

http://www.silverthorn-farm.com/members/types

As mentioned on the website and in previous newsletters, the 2013 CSA share is intended to be used for all things produced by Silverthorn Farm. We are primarily a vegetable farm but do raise eggs and pork. Other local products such as meats, honey, cheese and mushrooms will be available to purchase a la carte' through the Locavore page. All of these products can only be purchased via Paypal at the time of ordering.

TURKEYS

On the Locavore page this week you will find Gary and Vicki Cox's pastured turkeys. They will be delivered this Wednesday and are frozen. Gary has lowered the price to $4.50 lb. with most turkeys weighing in around 21 lbs.  Take this opportunity to try a pastured turkey if you haven't before. All you need is one trip inside a conventional confined turkey barn to understand how inhumane it is. It's refreshing to see Gary moving birds around to fresh pasture every couple of days, feeding them 100% organic grains, and processing them locally. There is no doubt this is a great way to support a needed change in today's agriculture. The turkeys on the Locavore page can be ordered by anyone with a Paypal account.  Deliveries are available to Lafayette, West Lafayette, Crawfordsville, Carmel and of course, farm pick up at the Crawfordsville farm.

Order your Turkey here:

Have a great week!

Farm News:

Farm clean up has begun here at the Crawfordsville farm. Tomato stakes have been pulled and plastic gets removed this week. We still have a couple of guys helping through the end of October here so it is full steam ahead to get completely cleaned up and ready to go by the end of the month. The barns at the Rossville farm are being built and should be ready to be locked up within a couple of weeks as well. This means that the "farm" with all the tools, equipment and general stuff, can be moved very shortly. Then it will just be on to the house renovation and moving the personal things later. Progress...finally!

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching!  Don't forget about the pastured, organically fed turkeys we have to offer from our farmer friend Gary Cox.  The birds weigh and average of 21 pounds and will be sold for $4.50/pound.  The turkeys have been processed early due to their quick weight gain therefore they are frozen.  If interested, a $25 deposit is required.  Please let us know.

CSA News:

Two weeks of deliveries remain to the Lafayette market, and three for the Wednesday delivery sites. The new season officially begins for us on Wednesday, November 14th and deliveries will resume on that day.  We will be taking the week of Nov. 4th off. We are looking forward to having you all back with us for another great year!

2013 sign ups are now open!  Click the link below to help you get started:

http://www.silverthorn-farm.com/members

Paid in full by December 1st is 15% extra

Paid in full by February 1st is 10% extra

Paid in full by March 1st is 5% extra

Sign ups will be allowed but no discount given after March 1st.

Once again this year you can activate your membership with a $250 deposit, but remember the deadlines above must be made to receive the full discount. We prefer you pay with a check and mail it to us directly, but Paypal is also available.  Paypal slaps a 3% user fee on us, which we unfortunately have to pass on to you. This fee was pretty large for us last year, so instead of raising the price across the board for everyone we are just adding it to the Paypal process. Remember the old system of writing checks? They still work and cost no extra to either one of us to use!

Our mailing address is still the same for now.

Farm News:

Was that me begging for rain a few months ago?? After Friday's harvest there is a possibility that I may be part duck! Looks like the frost is coming early this year, with 32 degrees recorded here both yesterday and this morning it is safe to say that some of our favorite summer crops are slipping away. We did a major harvest of all of the beans, peppers, eggplant and tomatillos before the cold and should have a good supply again this week. Tomatoes are still protected under the cover of the greenhouses and will continue until we get around to removing them. Finally, the greens are back and looking great, with the exception of spinach. After our fourth planting this fall we finally have germination. We will be lucky to get a cutting by the end of the month, but should be in great shape for November/December.

On a side note the farm at Rossville is really taking shape. Most of you know my history as a builder before turning Organic farmer. When it was time to set trusses this past Wednesday on our two barns I really did not think anything of it. Wow, I apparently haven't used those muscles in several years, I am still trying to walk straight again.  Mornings are a little stiff for this 36 yrs old!  The result of the days work looks great and we should have the sides and roofs on this week. Somehow with all the madness of the season we are actually in pretty good shape on the construction projects. Our main goal was to have everything up out of the ground and ready for interior finishing by November, all that is left are the greenhouses and painting the exterior of the house. Still lots to do for sure, but we are getting close; a move in date by March 1st still seems possible.....we will see.

CSA News:

**ATTENTION CARMEL CSA MEMBERS*** Carmel market has ended now so deliveries will be changed to Wednesday afternoonS at the Carmel Great Harvest Bread Location from 4-6pm. Janet and Jerry Lecy are good friends of ours and again are helping us out with a place to deliver our vegetables. They close at 6pm so make sure to be there before the doors are locked.

Throughout this crazy year we have been able to pull out a little bit of each type of vegetable that we grow. Size and quantity haven't always been what we hoped for but we had product to offer at least. We finally have a total failure, and it happens to be one of our favorites: sweet potatoes! We plant a lot of sweet potatoes, 2500 plants to be exact. This should give us some around 4-5000 lbs on an average year (whatever that means) This year we planted the 2500 slips just to see them burn up in the sun two weeks later.  We quickly ordered another 2500 to replant and crossed our fingers. After digging this past week we came up with FOUR five gallon buckets of something similar to a sweet potato. Maybe a few baking size but mostly bare roots with no potatoes as we pulled them up. A frustrating reminder of the drought we endured this summer.

Farm News:

The farm is beginning to wind down here in Darlington. It is already a strange feeling to not be planting, tending to and planning more crops here. We are in full transistion mode, moving as much product up to the new farm as possible while keeping things alive here for a few more weeks. A light frost last week did no harm to speak of, but a couple weeks of cool cloudy fall weather has slowed down growth for sure. The Rossville farm is starting to really shape up; both barns have been framed up now and the greenhouse spaces planted to fall winter crops. From cornfield to complex in a matter of months is both fun, and challenging all at the same time. Thankfully we have all of our utilities buried in place and ready for hookup. We will set trusses and put roofs on the barns this Wednesday and Thursday. This is the major point that I wanted to accomplish by fall. Now comes the greenhouse tear down and rebuild that I have been talking about for a while now. Don't know how or when, but we will get them moved this fall!

CSA News:

2013 sign ups are now open!

It is always exciting to end one season and begin another. Honestly, to put this year behind us a begin the 2013 season as Silverthorn Farm is a huge milestone for us and we can't wait to get started!

There are a few small changes for next year we want to go over real quick (all of this information is covered on the website).

The first is the Locavore page. This page will have all products not produced by Silverthorn Farm ie meats, honey or other items we support from other local producers. Your vegetable share will NOT include these items.  If you're wanting to purchase such items, two separate checkouts are required; one for Silverthorn Farm products which will be paid for with your online credit and a seperate checkout for the Locavore page that will need to be paid for via Paypal. This allows us to properly plan our expenses while at the same time giving you access to local meats and other products that we do not produce.

All products produced by Silverthorn Farm including vegetables, eggs and limited meat products are available for purchase with your CSA membership. So no worries on the eggs, we will still have them for you!

The other notable change is discount rates and deadlines. We put these in place to show you the importance of your membership with us and when the most critical times are for your support. Remember that your memberships are what run our farm, and our expenses for next year already begin this fall and early winter. To effectively make plans and purchase inputs for the upcoming season, we need your support. The dates are as follows:

Paid in full by December 1st is 15% extra

Paid in full by February 1st is 10% extra

Paid in full by March 1st is 5% extra

Sign ups will be allowed but no discount given after March 1st.

Farm News:

Finally after much thought and contemplation, the new farm has a name!  But why change names? I have always felt like the name of the farm should reflect the land and it's history. We are farmers & stewards of a place created long before we became involved. Emily and I have had an incredible opportunity to take over 120 acres that has been in her family for over 150 years....That is truly amazing to us, to think that 6 generations ago, in 1864 Emily's great, great great grandfather, William Silverthorn moved to Rossville and bought his first of several pieces of land in the area. Over the years he would piece together nearly 900 acres in the community and become well know as a purebred Herford cattle farm. Pretty amazing and inspiring to think of managing that kind of area in the late 1800's.

So with that history in mind we have decided to go with SILVERTHORN FARM, it has lots of great history and meaning for our family, hopefully we can give the name the honor it deserves over the coming years.

Much about us will remain the same at the new farm, but there will also be some exciting additions to our services as well. To begin with we will have a full service farm store open year round for not only the local community but all of our CSA members as well.  We will offer U-pick strawberries in the spring, U-pick beans and tomatoes in the summer and a fall harvest full of pumpkins in the fall. We want to become a destination for not only great food, but education and family experience as well. We are working on creating a place where agriculture thrives just as it once was. We are anxious and excited about the farm "opening" this spring.

CSA News:

The new website is up and running: www.silverthorn-farm.com. When you go to www.tranquilridgefarm.com it will automatically take you to the new site.  Everything will look the same for a now, but we will continue to edit and revampthe site daily. The links above are new to the ordering page, but again if you go to the old site it will take you to the right place.

We should have memberships open for the 2013 season by the end of the week. You will notice some slight differences in the shares this year.

~The vegetable shares will still be $525.00 and $325.00 for the year with a minimum of $250.00 deposit due at sign-up.

~The difference this year is that if you want to order products not produced by us, specifically meat, honey and other products to come you will need to purchase "Locavore credits". These will be available all year in $100 increments which you will be able to pay for by Paypal or check, just as you would when purchasing the vegetable shares.  Why the change? The vast majority of you are using our system well and just adding some meat to compliment our vegetable shares.  After all, we are a vegetable farm selling vegetable shares. We know from past years the percentage of money overall that we should hold back in order to purchase those extra items for you. this year we have had some problems with people ordering no vegetables all year and then purchasing meat at the end of the season just to use up their money. There is no rule against this of course, but the strain it puts on our farm is unreasonable. With the Locavore share, we will know exactly how much is intended to spend on meats and other products and can plan and purchase accordingly. Our intent is to make as many local products available to you as possible as we love to support other farms like us who are doing great work.

Have a great week!

Farm News:

This time of year brings some relief to us.  As the season starts to wind down, so can we...but only a little this winter especially with the farm move.  No rest for the weary!  We have to be thinking ahead to next season which is why 12,000 strawberry plants have been planted on the Rossville farm this past week.  That's a step up from the 3000 plants we had this season.

We are harvesting all of our winter squash this week, digging the rest of the potatoes, continuing plantings of greens, and the list goes on.  Nate has no trouble staying incredibly busy!

CSA News:

Don't forget about the pastured, organically fed turkeys we have to offer from our farmer friend Gary Cox.  They will be available and delivered fresh just in time for Thanksgiving.  If interested, a $25 deposit is required.  Please let us know.

You might have noticed a link within the CSA store tab titled "additional CSA credits".  This link has been added to make it easy for you to add money to your account for the remainder of the season.  We are offering credits in $25 increments and you will be able to "checkout" just as you do when you place your vegetable order for the week.  Payment options are Paypal or check.

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes this past week since Macy has been born.  She's amazing and we are all doing very well!

Farm News:

Nice, easy, long rains are really helping refresh the land. It's nice to see all the green again, fall will be here soon enough; I'm trying to soak up all the "green" I can while we have it.

I remember planting our winter squash and pumpkins up on the Rossville farm this spring and hoping that I wasn't too late in getting them in. Well here we are the first week of September and the Spaghetti and Delicata squash are ready to go. Most of the pumpkins are just about finished up as well. Butternut, Buttercup, Acorn squash and pie pumkins are all coming on over the next couple of weeks; it will be a beautiful harvest! Why? Most plants have what we call a maturity date; that is how many days from the time the seed emerges to the time the fruit is ready for harvest. While each seed comes with a general maturity date on the package, mother nature really determines how fast they reach their end. Growing degree days have gone throught the roof this year as well as lots of sunshine for photosynthesis thus early fruit set and early maturity. The unknowns of seasons and weather is why I generally take chances and risks on early and late plantings.....you just never know what will happen next!

CSA News:

We have been having some problems with split tomatoes in share bags. This is a problem I am aware of and trying diligently to eliminate. We went from 2500lbs of prime tomatoes a week to searching for 200 lbs last week. The main problem is drought folllowed by excess moisture. There are literally thousands of pounds of tomatoes on the ground that have split open. When we do finally get some fruit that look nice often by the time they make it to the barn they are split as well. We sort again and then pack the best we have for you, still there are problems with splits. Rest assured the fruit is well worth eating, it just won't store and keep as well as the earlier fruit of the season. We will keep sorting and putting our best product in the share for you. In the meantime please be patient and understanding of this record breaking crazy year that we are having.

Several newsletters ago we mentioned we have available fresh turkeys for Thanksgiving.  Our good friend and neighbor, Gary Cox, is raising 30 birds to be ready when the time comes around.  There is a $25 deposit to hold the turkey and it is  first come, first serve.  This deposit will have to be paid by check or cash and cannot come out of your CSA account.  The birds will be sold fresh for $6.00/pound.  Thanksgiving is really just around the corner!  Please let us know if you are interested.

**Emily is feeling and looking great, Jensen is excited and Daddy is anxious as usual.  Keep in mind that a little one should be coming our way within this next week and we will do our best to make harvest and deliveries without skipping a beat. Mommy and baby will be our top priority and we may have to make some last minute changes in getting you your goodies, so stay tuned to any emails from us and give us nothing but happy thoughts over the coming days.  We are very excited!**

Have a great week,

Nate, Emily and Jensen

Farm News:

The greens are coming back and the tomatoes are going away... The rains over the last couple of weeks really helped everything on the farm, except tomatoes. 6 inches of rain in 10 days after a long drought means exploding fruit. Overall it feels great to have at least a little moisture back in the ground.

We have 12,000 strawberry plugs coming this next week, so preparations at the new Rossville farm are under way for these plants. It is a huge increase in production over the last couple of years. The opportunity for U-pick, On-Farm sales, CSA and market demand have driven this decision.

Speaking of the Rossville farm, it looks like someone decided to try out a new peice of equipment up there right now. The amount of underground infrastructure needed for the house, barns, greenhouses and fields is like a maze of tunnels criss-crossing the barnlot and yard. The good thing is that after this week most all of the underground work will be complete and we will be able to hook right up to the utilities when needed. This saves lots of headaches and time compared to digging in the cold, wet months ahead. Greenhouses will begin to come down this next week, about half are now empty here for the season and ready for their new home in Rossville with lots of yummy winter greens to come.  As Emily mentioned in last week's newsletter, we cut nearly 8,000 board feet of poplar, and I just can't hardly wait to see it up on the new buildings!!

CSA News:

You'll notice some additions to the meat selections this week.  We will add more as they become available.  We have 11 deliveries left this season, make sure and check your balances and plan accordingly. This is the time of year when our CSA may be a bit of a challenge for some. Some of you are running low on available credit; some of you have most of your credit left. The challenge for both is to budget and plan out the remainder of the season. We want you to be able to utilize your share and hope you find value in our system. Sign ups will begin for next season in September.

With a new and permanent location coming to us next season we have been really thinking of a new name. Tranquil Ridge fits this landscape well, but is a stretch for the nearly level ground of Rossville.  We are going to be in a geographic transition as well as a farm name transition.  Look for a new name coming soon...

Have a great week,

Nate, Emily and Jensen

Farm News:

I never knew I could enjoy mud so much as I did on Friday while harvesting! Getting a little over 3 inches of rain this past week has really made everything feel better. Sure it's a little late on some things but to be able to walk without crunching has been a delight. I spent most of the day harvesting barefoot and loved it!

Through all the trials of the year a lot of really great things are happening for us as a farm and a family!

Our CSA is larger and stronger than ever before.

The Rossville project is really coming along well, both the house and the farm itself.

Our summer crops of tomatoes, peppers and eggplants are growing like gangbusters.

Winter squash, beets, carrots and fall brassicas are thriving on the Rossville farm.

Emily is doing great and Jensen will soon be a big brother.

Our minds and bodies are still mostly intact!

What could be better?!

We have been telling ourselves all year if we survive this year we can weather about any storm that comes our way. We are over the halfway mark of the season and able to see that dim light at the end of the tunnel. The excitement of the move is really beginning to build now and is what drives us forward. Hope you are all with us for the ride over the next couple of years!!
