Farm News:

I realize that our newsletters always start with weather related comments, but that is our life around here.  How could we not comment about the weather this past week, right?  It was by far the worst week we've had in the seven years we've been farming as far as heat and exhaustion go.  Our crew worked so hard and without complaint. We're all glad for 85 degree forcast this week and crossing our fingers for the small chance of rain this afternoon.

Our house in Rossville is coming along slowly but surely.  Our goal is to have all the outside work done before the cold weather approaches (IF we ever get any cold weather!). Nate spends every extra minute he has working there.  The winter squash that was planted there several weeks ago looks fantastic!  September will be here before we know it an we'll be harvesting all of it.

CSA News:

On another note, we urge those of you who are not reading these weekly newsletters to read them!  They serve as our only communication between each other and the context has some important information most of the time ie last week's delivery changes.
Tomatoes are here!  100 pounds were picked on Friday and we're expecting to hopefully triple that this week.  We will be digging several different varieties of potatoes in the weeks to come.  Head lettuce is not available this week due to the heat, but will only be absent for 2 more weeks or so.

Have a great week!

Emily, Nate & Jensen

FARM NEWS:

After a brutal day on Friday it was nice to pull out 1/2" of rain here on the Crawfordsville farm, and over an inch in Rossville. Every little bit helps at this point. We have decided that after burning up the well pump here on the Crawfordsville farm this week, that we are more than maxed out on water production. The smartest move for us at this point is to move all of our remaining plantings to the Rossville farm were the water is plentiful. Vegetable farmers are not the only ones feeling the strain of the drought right now. Corn and bean farmers are in a tough situation as well. All of our farmer friends who raise grass fed animals are searching for food for their animals as well. With the severity of this drought comes higher commodity prices which passed on ultimately higher prices to you, the consumer. So the best strategy in my opinion is to make sure you know where to get your food locally and stock up while you can. Over the next few months I would expect you to be able to purchase local meats, eggs and of course vegetables at very comparable prices to the big box stores. We are holding onto our prices at this point, but can only do so for so long and there is no doubt that our feed and input costs will be rising.

On the upside here, the tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, melons, and tomatillos look great and will be in full production withing a couple of weeks. Sweet corn is tasseling but I think even the racoons will need a back brace to pick it!!

CSA NEWS:

Summer crops are coming on soon and the head lettuce seems to be holding on for now in this blistering heat.  We will see how this week treats it. We will be digging potatoes this week, as the plants are now dying back which means they are done producing ie no more yield, so we might as well start harvesting.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE TO THE FOLLOWING:
There will NOT be any deliveries on Wednesday, July 4th.  Harvesting will be done on Friday (6th) for deliveries on Saturday (7th).  We WILL deliver as usual on that following Saturday, July 7th to Carmel & Lafayette Farmer's markets, & Wabash College.
**Attention Crawfordsville area CSA members** We will be delivering to the Chapel on Saturday morning (7th) from 8am-12pm if you are interested in placing an order that week.
**Attention On-farm pickups**  We will have orders ready in the washroom refrigerator as usual, but on Saturday July 7th from 8-12pm.
**There will not be any deliveries to This Old Farm Meats & Processing that week.

Have a great 4th!!!

FARM NEWS:

There hasn't been much of a change around the farm this week. We had about 2/10ths of rain on Thursday evening here in Crawfordsville. We were at the Rossville farm that day finishing up all of the winter squash and pumpkin plantings and got a little over a 1/4 inch of rain. The well has been drilled and gives us plenty of water to irrigate. It is quite a relief to be able to plant three acres of crops and turn on a well that will irrrigate the entire field at once. The water in Rossville will really make a difference for us over the coming years!

Here, at the Crawfordsville site we are just trying to keep things alive, unfortunately this means less overall crop. It is also a week where we are concentrating on mid to late September crops. Getting the seeds to germinate this week will be the top priority.

Frustration is a difficult emotion to overcome but on a small farm this has to be motivation.  July and August could very well be perfect growing conditions, but of course it could also be more of the same patterns that we have had this spring so far. The fact that remains is that we are closing in on about 105-110 days left of frost free growing. After that first frost, our options and sales decrease dramatically. We will get as much out as we can and push through the challenges of the season, cross our fingers, and hope for the best.

CSA NEWS:

July 4th is falling on a pretty good day and time this year. I really think that the break for a few days next week will give the plants and veggies a chance to catch up and come on. We ate a tomato on Friday and several more are starting to show nice color; the cherry tomatoes are slowly starting to come on as well. Our entire first planting of beans has been a disappointment; there they stand, only one foot tall and not many beans. Potatoes are sitting in a survival mode as well and are really too small to start digging.  Sweet corn is tasseling at about waist high. All these crops will be ready over the coming weeks, and I think that the July 11th deliveries should start the bigger harvest of summer goodies.

FARM NEWS:

Again, we are talking, thinking, eating, and sleeping RAIN!!  It's a constant thought at our house.  The weather says we have a good chance Monday and Tuesday.
We are up in Rossville this weekend working ground for all the winter squash to be planted by next week.  The ground is like cement which makes it hard to work...just ask Nate...I think he said he broke two pieces of equipment yesterday afternoon.

We are happy to have available fresh turkeys for Thanksgiving (if you're even thinking that far ahead already!).  Our good friend and neighbor, Gary Cox, is raising 30 birds to be ready when the time comes around.  There is a $25 deposit to hold the turkey and it is  first come, first serve.  This deposit will have to be paid by check or cash and cannot come out of your CSA account.  The birds will be sold fresh for $6.00/pound.  Please let us know if you are interested.

CSA NEWS:

Last week you might have noticed there was a full share box and a half share box available on the store.  These options are available to anyone who wants their order to be a surprise!  We will choose what goes in the share that week and the cost is $22 or $14, respectively.  The full share box and half share boxes are available again this week.

All CSA accounts/balances have been credited for any missing items or discrepancies that have occured within the last few weeks.
If you are curious about your balance (how much you have left to spend this season), please click on "your membership status" under the CSA Memberships tab at the top of our homepage.
The number shown will be a negative number; please be aware that this is only for our accounting purposes and that the amount is actually a positive amount.  I realize this might cause some confusion, but right now it's the only way for us to show the balances.

Have a fantastic week!

Farm News:

Much needed rain and a bit of a cool down has been nice. We had about 3/4 of an inch over this past week. Most vegetables do best with an inch of rain a week, so we are still a bit short on moisture but we will take it. The berries have came to an end. Usually, they slow down to a stop, to go from 150 lbs per picking last week to 5 this week was unexpected and disappointing, however, it was a great season for them!

Peas will be in full swing for the next couple of weeks and the crop looks great. Think of the guys at TRF spending 5 or 6 hours hand picking each pea pod while you enjoy these sweet spring snacks. Potatoes are in full bloom and we should have them available in the coming weeks. Green beans are setting pods as well. The plants are quite small on the first planting but second and third plantings are coming on very well behind them. Sweet corn is coming up well but we are still looking at late July before the crop is ready. We lost our first planting to a late freeze. Tomatoes are setting fruit, depending on the weather for the next few weeks we may just have them available by the end of the month! Can't wait!

CSA news:

This week, most of the orders for strawberries could not be filled.  Wednesday orders were shorted and there weren't any for Saturday orders. As stated above, they absolutely quit on us. If we were a traditional CSA, the berries would have just not been in your "box" this week. With the way we are set up, you make the decision on each item and order accordingly.  I try pretty hard each week to make calculated guesses as to what we have available. Usually I am right on, but sometimes I miss. Orders from Wednesday have already been credited, and Saturday's credits will be applied in the next couple of days. In the end the only risk you take with us is that you don't have a quart of berries, your money is still available. Please understand that things don't always go as planned on a small, organic farm and we appreciate your support and patience.

Enjoy the week!

Farm News:

Hot and dry, as you already know. We felt like it was August on Friday as we were harvesting; everything is so dry out in the fields right now. We are running water around the clock just trying to keep up right now. Getting water across 15 acres in no small task with a small well and limited irrigation supplies, but we are managing.  Fingers are crossed with the small chance of rain on Memorial Day. One of the things we are very excited about with the new farm up in Rossville will be the 180 gallon per minute well, compared to our 20 gallon per minute well here.

The potato beetles, cabbage worms and cucumber beetles are really coming on strong right now, so we are doing our best to stay ahead of them. Thankfully organic pest controls have come a long way in the past few years so our options are growing. In general, it is still a control situation as opposed to a complete kill that commercial pesticides generally have. This helps us keep the good bugs around and slow down the damaging ones.

There is an upside to the weather. We are actually in pretty good shape with weed control at this point. Without excess moisture weeds that have been cultivated cannot re-root. We still have some hand weeding to do, but our mechanical cultivation has taken care of 80% of the problem areas. Our backs are thankful!!

CSA news:

We will shut down the sign ups this week on May 30th! Even without the added discount for the late arrivals to our program we hope everyone finds a great value in supporting local, sustainable agriculture. Remember the season ends on October 31st. Please plan on having your account balance at $0 by then. Please be aware that any mooney left on the account does not carry over and is forfeited as a new season begins in November. If you are having any trouble placing an order please respond to this email. We both have email access during the day via our phones, but Emily has more available time to help you out than calling Nate directly.

Enjoy the week!

Farm News:

I hate to start whining about the lack of rain this early in the year, but I have no choice!  Looking at the small chance we have on Monday and a ten day outlook with 80-90 degree wheather and nothing but sun certainly makes us nervous. This week will be a scramble to move driptape irrigation around the farm as much as possible to save, start and help all of our tender transplants along. This is July-August type of work generally, not May! Strawberries look good for at least another week and hopefully two. All the work early in the season to save blooms from cold weather has paid off and the plants are giving us a nice set of fruit this year. So far we have picked around 1200 quarts!

CSA news:

Hopefully you are all getting used to the ordering system we have set up. If you are having any trouble please let us know. We want it to be easy for everyone to access the best local food available. Just click on the links above as soon as you read the email and have your veggie shopping completed for this week.  Enjoy those berries while they last!

Enjoy the week!

Farm News:
What a great time of year, long days and warm night's are really helping everything grow well this spring. So far we have been able to stay ahead of the weed's this spring. Some new cultivating tools on our old Allis Chalmer's cultivating tractor has really made an impact this spring. Cucumber beetles are already causing havoc among our greenhouse planting. So far a mixture of kaolin clay has helped deter them from fatal damage to the plants. This does not kill or control the beetles, but gives them a "pins and needles" type of feel when they land on the plants. So far they have found other things to feast on. Strawberries are still producing fairly well, we hope for a couple more weeks of harvest. Now that we are in to harvest we can see somewhere around a 40% loss from those cold mornings 4 weeks back. Still a nice crop with great flavor!
One more week of full tilt planting and we will be about caught up with the main summer planting. I feel like we are already searching for space for successive plantings. Thankfully we will be putting all of our winter squash and pumpking plantings up on the Rossville farm this year. Looks like about 4 acres worth this year. We are down to about 15 acres here at the Crawfordsville farm, so that will really free up some space.
ROSSVILLE FARM:
Lots of questions and excitement for the Rossville farm project we have under way. So here is a quick update on the progress. The house has been gutted down to the original studs in most of the downstairs. New walls are up and old one's removed. We are finally ready for the rebuilding part, the new electric and plumbing are next along with the exterior porches. Our new well was drilled last week, we found an excellent source of water. 180 gallons per minute at 102 feet deep, that is a lot of water and we are thankfull!! The yard has been seeded and is growing well, 30 acres of pasture and clover cover crop was planted a couple weeks ago as well. Over all great progress!!

CSA news:

Carmel market begin's this weekend, so Indy pick ups will be available there and no longer at Great Harvest for the rest of the summer. Our computer went down early last week, we are working on setting up a new one right now. In the meantime market purchases that you may have made in the last two weeks have not been put on yet, we will have this accomplished by the end of the week.

Enjoy the week!

Farm News:

Thanks to all who came to the Lafayette Farmer's Market on Saturday.  We had a fantastic opening day!  It felt so good for me to be there as I spent all of last year's season vending at the Carmel Farmer's market.  It was nice to spend the day as a family doing what we love!  Jensen spent the morning eating strawberries and popcorn.  If I knew that's all it takes to keep him occupied, I would have introduced the combination a long time ago!

The rain we received last week was enough to keep the ground pretty soggy for several days.  The plants and weeds both needed it!  This will definetely be a week of weeding and cultivating.  There was a tornado touchdown about 4 miles south of the farm and we experienced about 1 minute of pea sized hail.  We were very fortunate not to have any damage but it was enough to make us very uneasy.

Our hens are finally laying a sufficient amount of eggs!  They got a later start than we were anticipating.  The price of a dozen eggs at this time is $4.50. You might notice a price increase as the summer progresses due to and increase in feed cost.  Last year at this time we were paying $600 per ton; this year the price dramatically increased to $855 per ton.

CSA news:

CSA members please pay attention to which pickup site you are selecting when checking out.  We are NOT delivering to Great Harvest Bread throughout the summer (this will not be an option as you proceed to checkout).  There are two delivery locations in West Lafayette: Calvary Baptist Church and a residential location in The Orchard subdivision.  I have changed the titles of the pickup locations slightly to avoid confusion.

Enjoy the week!
