We are keeping it LOCAL on Thanksgiving,

are you?!

How exciting that the holiday season is upon us!  Let's celebrate together by eating some good food!  In addition to our vegetables, we have HAMS that can easily be purchased online and delivered to you via one of our convenient delivery locations.

Today, November 19th, 2016 marks the last farmer's market of the season and of our career.  Bittersweet, yes.  Exciting, yes! We truly thank everyone who has supported us every Saturday throughout the last 9 years.  It hasn't gone unnoticed and will certainly not be forgotten!

We may not be vending at farmer's markets anymore, but don't fear, you can still access our food easily via our CSA!  It's not too late to join our farm family!

Choose your desired share type and start eating clean AND local!

CSA members please note:
  • Winter deliveries are scheduled for every other week through January. You may order the amount you need for two weeks of eating (within the parameters of your share type, of course!).  Our greens will last 10-14 days in your refrigerator, remember, and storage crops such as sweet potatoes, watermelon radish, carrots and squash have a great storage life. If you have questions on proper storage ask us!
  • Kokomo Dental Care pickup time is 10:00am-12:00pm on Wednesday. The office is closing at noon that day due to the holiday.

*remember, the online store will close on MONDAY morning at 8:00am for Tuesday/Wednesday deliveries.

The latest news!
The fall weather has arrived! I must say there is nothing quite as refreshing as a crisp autumn morning on the farm. The fields will be put to rest as we transition into the greenhouses. With nearly an acre under cover, the bounty looks awesome!

Brussels sprouts are here! They are the only one of the brassica crops that has pushed through the disease cycles and problems we have had this year. While a bit small, they are still yummy and hard to beat with any other fall dish. If you have never cooked fresh brussels, now is the time to give it a shot!

Here's what to expect in your tummies for the winter season:

  • Spinach will be available in two weeks.
  • Kale, lettuce, radishes, Collard greens, arugula, and spinach.  All a perfect compliment to our beets, carrots, sweet potatoes and butternut squash that we have in storage (Remember, some of those beloved storage crops such as delicata squash, spaghetti squash, regular potatoes that we all love are in short to non-existent supply this year, unfortunately.  Yes, we did grow them (as we did broccoli and cauliflower), but like we've said - they succumbed to disease....boo!).

This is the last week of deliveries of the main growing season.  We will transition into the winter delivery season the week of November 6th.  There will be some NEW pickup locations as well as changes in our delivery route/schedule.  Please take a look at the EVENT CALENDAR and the PICKUP LOCATIONS to see these exciting new changes!

*THERE WILL NOT BE ANY CSA DELIVERIES THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 30TH (next week).
WE WILL NOT BE AT MARKET ON NOVEMBER 5TH*

What a night! Another successful Farm to Fork dinner at Silverthorn Farm.  Beautiful weather, beautiful food, and beautiful people!

The dinner is a successful memory now! It feels great to put on an event such as that, and it feels even better to have it behind us as we charge full steam ahead into winter production and fall farm clean up mode. The end of the season is in sight and so to are the days of a bit less intensity....always a welcome change after the madness of a long season. Thanks again to all who made it out on a truly perfect evening with a stellar sunset and a beautiful, full moon rising from the east...it was awesome. And of course, Lali and her amazing staff at The Juniper Spoon prepared and incredible meal that won't soon be forgotten! If anyone has pictures, please feel free to send them to us or share on Facebook! Have a great week everyone!

Hello!

Just a few reminders about Dinner on the Farm on Saturday! We are watching the weather very closely at it looks like Clinton County is going to be rain free for the afternoon and evening!  What a relief as dinner will be eaten outdoors! We are hopeful the clouds will dissipate and allow us to see the beautiful full moon in the eastern sky.

Nate and I are excited to meet and greet each and every one of you tomorrow evening.  If you will approach the table area at the front of the lane, we will personally check your name off our list as you arrive - no need to bring your ticket confirmation.

We will have drinks and appetizers on the front porch of the main barn starting at 5:30.  Please feel free to pour yourself a beverage and mingle about.  While we will not be giving a guided tour of the farm, we welcome you to walk around the farm as freely as you wish.  There will be plenty of time to do that before and after dinner (We do have a small herd of cows that are contained by live-wired fencing - be mindful about that or you'll get a little shock!).

One side note: dress comfortably and accordingly! You're coming to the country, folks!  The evenings are getting a little chilly so layered clothing might be a good idea.  We might even start a little fire while we listen to the live music!

Directions:  Google often places our farm in the wrong location.  Click here for accurate directions!  When you arrive, you will park in the grass on the left side of the driveway.  If you have questions or need assistance, please call us 765-230-6500.

See you at the farm!

Blueberry season is coming to a close and this will be the last week for orders until next year.
Please have your orders placed by Tuesday morning at 8:00am for deliveries Wednesday 10th - Saturday 13th.

We will have apples and peaches starting next week!
We have decided to purchase organic and conventional as we have a small market for both.  The organic apples will come from Stan and Judy Musgrave at Countryside Orchard in near Rochester and the conventional apples and Red Haven peaches will come from Doud's Orchard in Denver, IN.

We will start with Monarch, Red Free, and William's Pride - organic.  The conventional varieties will include Pristine and Early Cortland.

The apples will be in limited quantities until we know what kind of market we have for them.  We will be selling them at the farm store and most likely online as well.  Pricing will follow.

WHAT'S HAPPENING ON THE FARM

Nothing like a quiet night on the front porch looking out over the farm in the moonlight to gain perspective of a season. We love it here. Most of this spring has felt somewhat behind and rushed with the new greenhouse construction pushing deep into April, followed by super wet and cool conditions. The last couple of weeks of this warm summer-like weather makes us feel like we are deeper into the season then what the reality of the calendar tells us. July 4th is always what I consider our half-time of the season and we are still two weeks away from that. We have begun to harvest tomatoes in earnest now! I can remember many seasons scrambling around to find a few ripe fruits to take to friend at the lake on the 4th. This year that should be no problem! Strawberries were super slow to start, and then raced through a very short three week season. Now we see the spinach give in to the summer heat and the zucchini explode into what can only be describe as a summer bounty that even the cucumber beetles and squash bugs can't slow down....for the moment anyway! We are settling into the summer routine of very scheduled harvest, planting, weeding and delivery days. The set schedule helps all of us on the farm reach a real sense of direction and makes the pace easier to manage. Walking the fields this time of year shows many different stages of plants with the future bounty looking more promising with each passing week. Most of the transplanting is behind us now with only a few fall crops to go. This week during two pretty large harvest and pack days on both Tuesday and Friday, the crew and I looked at our harvest board at the beginning of the day and braced for what was sure to be a couple of very long drawn out days. What is incredible is how fast we actually moved through the list and the ease at which our well oiled machine worked! We are blessed with a lot of returning employees who are all very well versed in our farm and the processes which we have in place. Both days we finished early and had time at the end to accomplish other work, something unheard of around here only a couple of years ago! We continue to be encouraged by the growing demand for our products through all marketing channels and are excited for the main season to come flying in here in a few weeks!

NEW NEWS!

The farm store is open and has new summer hours: Tuesday-Friday 9am-6pm and Saturday 9am-4pm. We are closed Sunday and Monday.

We will have blueberries for sale the second week of July! These are not from our farm, but from an organic blueberry farm in northern Indiana.  If you wish to place an order for bulk, please contact Emily.

APPLES! Yes, we will have apples this fall!  Again, not from our farm (our orchard is still growing), but from an organic apple orchard near Rochester, IN.  We are very excited to bring these local fruits into our farm store for sale.

SIDENOTE: they will only be for sale in our farm store, not at markets or for CSA delivery.

FUN NEWS: I have said many times how lucky I feel to be able to farm for a living and raise my family on this place and in this way. So much of my inspiration has come not only from our customers who continue to encourage us but also from publications, farmer associations, conferences, websites and Podcasts from other farmers around the country and world. The sustainable ag community is one that freely shares so much information. It is truly what has driven the local food movement across our country; if you need help or guidance there is usually a farmer or institution ready to show you the way at a moments notice. Chris Blanchard is one of those resources that is a "Rock Star" within our sustainable ag community. He done much over the years in supporting and helping to move this industry forward. His latest project has been a podcast heard weekly by more than 5,000 of my peers nationwide. This past week I had the opportunity to share our farms story on his podcast. I must say that over the years I have been asked to speak on many different occasions, never have I been more nervous than Thursday morning just before the podcast went live to all my peers! Check it out if you have an extra 1 1/2 hours on your hands! farmertofarmerpodcast.com/episodes/parks

CSA MEMBER NEWS: Thanks for the everyone's feedback after last week's newsletter.  We are never wanting to sound like debbie downers!  Email is the best form of communication we have with each and every one of you.  Most members we have met, some we haven't and we want to!  The next farm event for CSA members is scheduled for August 14th - we're thinking a pick and process event!  Check out the event calendar!
