FAQ's

HOW DOES YOUR MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM WORK?

Members sign up for an annual CSA (community supported agriculture) membership with a monthly fee. In exchange, you will receive  your choice of vegetables for at least 38 weeks per year. You will place your order through our convenient online store to select only the products you want.

HOW DO I SIGN UP?
It’s easy! Visit our Farm Memberships page to get started. Sign up as a new or returning member.

WHAT PAYMENT TYPES ARE ACCEPTED?
You can purchase your membership via credit or debit card. Payments are processed by Paypal and will include 2%-3% processing fee each month.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

  • Large Full Season Share $960
  • Small Full Season Share $480
  • Individual shares are offered seasonally:
    • Spring share $120 (six weeks)
    • Summer share $600 (twenty weeks)
    • Winter share $240 (six weeks)

*You may purchase multiple shares of each (up to 6) if you wish.  Paypal may add additional payment processing fees. Learn more.

WHAT DAY OF THE MONTH WILL PAYMENT BE PROCESSED?
Your first payment will be charged at checkout and all future payments will  be processed on the 21st day of each month.

WHY DO I HAVE TO MAKE PAYMENTS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS?
Our farm is built around the concept of sustainability. We have created a payment plan that spreads out your cost evenly over 12 months (or you can choose to pay in full) and supports our operation even when there is no harvest to share. This allows us to keep our staff employed during the winter months and prepare for spring by ordering supplies, prepping the greenhouses and feeding the animals. Your investment in the winter is returned to you in the spring, summer and fall in the form of a beautiful and bountiful harvest.

HOW DOES ORDERING WORK?
Members have access to place custom orders via our convenient online store.  When certain products are in high demand or are available in limited quantities, we may impose a maximum order quantity until supplies are replenished.

CAN I CHANGE MY PICK-UP LOCATION FROM WEEK TO WEEK?
Of course!  You'll have the option to select your pick-up location every time you place an order.  Want to pick up this week in Broad Ripple, but next week at Blooming Life Yoga Studio in Zionsville?  You got it!  Just another way our membership program is customized for you and easy to use.

IS THERE A MINIMUM ORDER I MUST PLACE EACH TIME?
No! But there is a maximum order limit depending on your share type and quantity.

  • Large Full Season Shares are allowed an average of $20/30/40/week*
  • Small Full Season Shares are allowed an average of $10/15/20/week*
  • Individual season shares:
    • Spring shares are allowed $20/week
    • Summer shares are allowed $30/week
    • Winter shares are allowed $40/ every two weeks

                               *per each season

WHAT PRODUCE DO I HAVE TO CHOOSE FROM ON A WEEKLY BASIS?  You can expect tender greens such as kale, arugula, lettuces, & micro greens in the spring. During the summer comes the bounty of tomatoes, peppers, corn, broccoli, melons, cantaloupe, potatoes, squashes, cucumbers, beans and eggplants.  Finally, the winter brings potatoes, sweet potatoes, butternut, spaghetti, & acorn squash, pumpkins, arugula, salad mix, kales, and other greens.

WHEN DOES MY MEMBERSHIP EXPIRE?
Your membership expires 12 months from the date you signed up.

HOW DO I RENEW MY MEMBERSHIP?
Your membership will continue to renew automatically until you ask us to cancel it.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I GO ON VACATION?
To keep our model sustainable, we can only allow accounts to be suspended for long-term absence (like a professor away on sabbatical). No refunds will be issued for a summer vacation or similar short-term travel.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I MOVE?
If you move, we will miss you! We will terminate your account on your moving date and no further payments will be charged to your account. No refunds will be issued due to a move.

HOW DO I CANCEL MY MEMBERSHIP?
If you decide that a Silverthorn Farm membership is not for you, you can cancel it at the end of your annual membership period (12 months from the date you signed up). Email us to cancel. Because the membership program is made sustainable by the total annual membership fee, we cannot offer mid-year cancellations.

IS MEAT INCLUDED IN MY MEMBERSHIP?
Meat is not currently included in your annual membership fee. You can, however, purchase meat by the cut from our farm to be delivered on a monthly basis with your regular CSA delivery. Quarters, halves, and whole pigs will be available as we have them.

ARE EGGS INCLUDED IN MY MEMBERSHIP? No. Egg shares are separate from your vegetable shares and can be purchased separately.

  • Spring $27
  • Summer egg share $90
  • Winter egg share $27

*One egg share equals one dozen eggs a week.  You may purchase up to 6 egg shares ( = 6 dozen a week).

CAN I BUY YOUR PRODUCTS AT FARMERS MARKETS?
We do participate in farmer's markets, and you can certainly purchase our products there, but joining our membership program is more than buying food.  It is supporting local, sustainable food production and family farms. Our products are available to our members first, and markets second.

ARE YOUR PRODUCTS ORGANIC?
We are not currently certified organic, but we use only organic seeds, soil amendments and pest controls.  We produce food we know we will feel good about feeding to our family, and you can feel the same feeding it to yours.

MAY WE COME OUT TO THE FARM?
Absolutely!  We encourage you to do so.  The only way we can ever really know where and how our food is raised is to see for ourselves.

HOW IS YOUR FOOD DIFFERENT THAN WHAT I CAN BUY AT THE GROCERY STORE?
You may think locally sourced food isn't that different than what you'll find in a grocery store.  In reality, while it's called the same name, the similarities end there (broccoli is broccoli, after all). Grocery store produce often travels long distances to get to you, especially if you're buying out-of-season produce (we all know strawberries aren't growing anywhere close to Indiana in January!).  The produce you buy at the grocery store was likely harvested weeks before it gets to your kitchen, and it has been "processed" in a facility to clean it and make it presentable to sit on store shelves.

Our produce is grown on our farm, and we pick it the day (or sometimes just hours) before you receive it.  That means it is at the peak of freshness and it will look, cook and taste differently.  You may find it takes less time to cook and the flavor is more robust (food transported long distances after harvest starts to lose it's flavor and nutrient levels decrease).

Occasionally, you'll find a little dirt or a bug that made its way into your bag of produce.  Those are all good signs, believe it or not.  You can feel confident your food was sourced locally, grown and transported with care and reached you at the peak of it's flavor and nutrients.  Give it a good rinse (we don't use chemicals, remember!?) and eat up!
